Sam McKenzie of the Nelson Swimming Club won the gold medal in the 50 metre freestyle for 12-year-old boys at the Junior National swimming meet held in Wellington this weekend.
McKenzie’s time of 28.33 sec beat his own personal best by 1.26 seconds and set a new Nelson-Marlborough record for 12-year-olds. McKenzie also placed 7th in the 100m freestyle, taking 2.8 seconds off his previous best in that event.
Daniel Trevurza of Motueka also pushed himself hard, placing 5th in the 50 m breaststroke for 10-year-old boys and taking a massive 3.4 seconds off his personal best, achieved just a week earlier at the Nelson-Marlborough championships. Trevurza improved by 1.7 seconds to place 6th in the 100 m breaststroke.
Also securing two top ten finishes was Georgina Trengrove (11) of Nelson South Swimming Club, who secured 7th and 9th places in the 50 and 100m breaststroke, respectively. Trengrove also carved chunks off her 100 and 200 m freestyle times, as she continues to reap the rewards of training time in the pool and competing at top level events.
Other swimmers representing the region at the national meet were Clara Foster, Sam Foster and Matai McGuinnety of Nelson South, Ben Price of Motueka, and Kaleb Johnston of Nelson.
