Samantha Trevurza has been awarded the Belsham Trophy as Nelson-Marlborough's Swimmer of the Year for 2012-13. The award recognises the swimmer who has a time closest in percentage terms to the winning time in the same event at the NZ Opens in the same year. Sam's time of 32.02 seconds in the 50m Backstroke was just 8.5% slower than the NZ Open winning time of 29.51 by Bobbi Gichard. Sam is just 14 years old.
Last year, when she was just 13, Sam also swam the backstroke leg of the medley relay for Nelson-Marlborough's Girls 13-15 year-old team at the National Short Course Championships. The team won the bronze medal against stiff competition from other swimmers from around New Zealand.
