Four Nelson-Marlborough swimmers have been selected for an all-South Island team - nicknamed the Makos - following their impressive performances at the South Island Championships held recently in Blenheim.
Sam McKenzie of the Nelson Swimming Club, Ellie Rukuwai and Phillippa Dwyer of the Nelson South Swimming Club, and Sara Gane of Blenheim Swimming Club will be part of the South Island’s “15 years & Under” zonal team, comprising just 20 swimmers.
McKenzie, 14, won three gold medals at the South Island Championships while Rukuwai, 15, and Gane, 15, brought home two golds each. Dwyer won two silver medals, including in the challenging 400m individual medley, and three bronze.
They will compete against three North Island zonal teams in the first ever inter-zone championship to be held in Wellington on 4 October. The meet is a pilot for an intended series of future meets designed to foster more opportunities for New Zealand’s best swimmers to compete head-on against each other. Another 20 swimmers, 16 years and over, have been chosen for a senior team.
