Motueka swimmer continues great form at NZ Juniors
Having won his age group at the Swimming Nelson-Marlborough Age Group Championships earlier this month, Motueka’s 12-year-old Daniel Trevurza was the region’s top performer at the State New Zealand Junior Championships held over the weekend in Wellington.
The Nelson Marlborough region was represented by seven swimmers from the Motueka, Tasman, Waimea and Nelson South swimming clubs.
Daniel swam a great race in his first event of the meet, winning a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke event for 12-year-old boys. Seeded 7th, Trevurza beat his personal best time by almost a second to claim the medal.
He also improved on his 8th seeding in the 100m breaststroke, only just missing out on another bronze medal in a close finish. Daniel recorded a credible 9th placing in the 200m breaststroke race to give him three top ten places.
Cassandra Hagan (12) from the Tasman Swim Club, making her first appearance at Junior Nationals, also recorded a top ten finish, placing 10th in the 400m freestyle. Cassandra placed 12th in the 400m individual medley, where she beat her best time by over 10 seconds, and had another 12th place finish in the 200m freestyle event with another personal best.
Kaleb Johnston (12), also from the Tasman Swim Club, just missed making the top ten in the 100m backstroke race for 12-year-old boys, finishing 11th and setting a new personal best time. He also finished 13th in the 200m backstroke.
Oliver Stark (12) from the Waimea Swimming Club was also competing for the first time at Junior Nationals. He finished 18th in the 200m backstroke, beating his personal best time by almost a full second.
Other Nelson Marlborough swimmers competing included Tara Hagan (10) from Tasman, who bettered her time in the 200m Breaststroke by 6 seconds, and Finella Gibbs-Beal (9) from Nelson South Swimming Club. Gibbs-Beal was the youngest top of the south competitor at the meet, and set new personal best times in the 50m and 200m freestyle events.
Burty Meffan (11), also from Nelson South, joined Oliver, Daniel and Kaleb in the freestyle and medley relays as their team recorded personal best times in both relay events.
