Ellie Rukuwai (16) broke four Nelson–Marlborough records and topped the Girls 15 years and over age group as she lead Nelson South to a narrow win over Tasman Swim Club at the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Winter Meet held in Blenheim.
Rukuwai was also named the winner of the Belsham Trophy for Swimmer of the Year for 2013-14 for having a time closest in percentage to the winning time in the equivalent event at the NZ Opens.
Sam McKenzie (15) lead Tasman as he won his age group and was named top male swimmer for scoring the most points across all age groups. McKenzie set seven new regional records on his way to winning six events.
Ten-year-old Finella Gibbs-Beal of Nelson South was the top-scoring female. She was first in four events, second in five and third in another.
Sartori Dobbie, visiting from the QEII Swim Club in Christchurch, took home the $100 prize for breaking a meet record by the largest margin. His time of 1:00.09 in the 100m backstroke bettered the old meet record of 1:08.66 by 12.5%. Tara Hagan of Tasman wasn’t far behind with an 11.2% improvement on a meet record in the 400m freestyle.
Another visitor, 10-year-old Taiko Torepe-Ormsby from the Wharenui Swim Club, set six new meet records and won the gold medal for the top boy in the 10 & Under age group.
Caitlin Delaney of Tasman was among the group that broke regional records, with six, while Sally McMath of Blenheim bagged five, Thomas Heaton of Tasman set four new marks, and Eddie Neill and Clara of Foster, both of Nelson South, broke one record each.

Boys 11-12: 1. Max Stackhouse (Tasman), 2. Oliver Stark (Nelson South), 3. Joshua Amyes (Tasman).
Girls 13-14: 1. Lucy Kerry (Blenheim), 2. Clara Foster (Nelson South), 3. Samantha Smith (Tasman).
Boys 13-14: 1. Satori Dobbie (QEII), 2. James Fleury (Tasman), 3. Daniel Trevurza (Motueka).
Girls 15 & Over: 1. Ellie Rukuwai (Nelson South), 2. Sally McMath (Blenheim), 3. Caitlin Delaney (Tasman).
