Sam McKenzie of the Tasman Swim Club dominated the men’s freestyle events at the South Island Championships in Blenheim, being declared the South Island Open Champion in the men’s 50, 100, 200 and 400 metre freestyle.

Piper Riley and Bendi Kepess won their age groups to lead Waimea College to the overall schools title at the South Island Secondary Schools Swimming Championships, held in Blenheim on Saturday. Swimmers from 25 different schools participated in the meet.

Sam McKenzie led from the front as Waimea College won the overall title at the Tasman Secondary Schools Swimming Championships, held in Blenheim on Sunday 14 May.

Hannah Bingham, Edyn Hodgson and Nathan Limmer each won four events to help Waimea Swimming Club defend the trophy for top club at the South Island Country & Town Swimming Competition held in Dunedin last weekend.

Matai McGuinniety of Nelson South Swimming Club won a gold medal in the 50m butterfly for 16-year-old boys at the New Zealand Age Group Championships in Wellington last week. Matai set a Nelson-Marlborough record in the morning prelims with a time of 25.99 seconds, then rose to the occasion to break it again in the final, winning gold with a time of 25.83.

Tasman Swimming Club handily won the JR Buchanan Cup for most team points at the 2017 Swimming Nelson Marlborough Long Course Championships held at Nayland pool, which involved 134 swimmers including some from Canterbury.

Eleven year old Nick Lovell of the Waimea Swimming Club won the Life Members Cup for best country club swimmer for the third year running as he helped Waimea capture the Crest Cup for best country club at the 2017 Swimming Nelson Marlborough Country & Town Championships.

Caitlin Delany of Tasman Swim Club claimed the national title in the open women's 200m breaststroke at the New Zealand Short Course Championships in Auckland.

The 18-year old Waimea College standout also won gold medals in the 17-18 year age group for the 50m and 200m breaststroke and a silver in the 400m individual medley.

Caitlin Delany, Thomas Heaton and Sam McKenzie of the Tasman Swim Club and Matai McGuinniety of Nelson South each earned a gold medal at the NZ Age Group Championships as swimmers from Nelson Marlborough finished with four golds, two silvers and six bronze medals between them.

Talya Harwood, Thomas Heaton and Caitlin Delany of the Tasman Swimming Club tested themselves against New Zealand’s Olympic swimmers at the 2016 New Zealand Open Swimming Championships last week and came up smiling, with Harwood and Heaton narrowly missing out on podium finishes.

Sam McKenzie and Cassie Hagan won 13 gold medals each and helped the Tasman Swim Club to a convincing win in overall points at the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Age Group Championships held in Nelson over Waitangi weekend.

Nick Lovell was the top-scoring swimmer at the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Country Club Championships for the second year in a row, helping his Waimea Swimming Club win the cup for top country club for a third consecutive year.

Tasman Swim Club standout and Waimea College student Sam McKenzie was named Sport Tasman Junior Sportsman of the Year at the Nelson Sports Awards on Friday 28 November 2015, in recognition of his outstanding year.

Caitlin Delany of Tasman Swim Club was top of her class in the female breaststroke. The 17 year old won 4 gold medals and set a meet record in the 100m breaststroke of 1:11.49. Delany, who attends Waimea College, also set a new Nelson Marlborough record in the 400m individual medley and was the top open swimmer in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Sam McKenzie broke his own New Zealand record in the 100m freestyle while winning his fourth gold medal on the final day of the National Age Group Championships in Wellington. Overall, Nelson Marlborough swimmers brought home 10 gold, 6 silver, and 4 bronze medals and broke 37 new regional records.

The NZCT South Island Masters Games are returning to Nelson, and swimming will be a part of the fun. The Games will run from 26 September through 4 October. The pool swimming will be held on Saturday 3 October. Early bird registrations open on 1 May 2015.

Sam McKenzie (15) of the Tasman Swim Club broke the NZ age group record for the 100 metre freestyle at the GHF Australian Age Group Championships in Sydney with a time of 52.02 seconds. Last year at the same competition, Sam set a NZ record for 14-year-old boys in the 50 m freestyle.

Sophie Woodhouse (13) and Anton Horton (16) lead the Blenheim Swimming Club to top club honours at the South Island Country & Town Competition held over the weekend at Stadium 2000 in Blenheim, successfully defending the trophy the club won last year in Invercargill.
